1 Do I need specific gear? Course basics
No. Any reliable camera works (including a phone). The course emphasizes access, timing, sequencing, captions, and editing decisions. If you have a camera with manual controls, great—if not, we’ll show you workarounds.
Recommended: one camera body, one lens you trust, extra battery, and a simple backup workflow.
2 How much time per week? Pacing
4–8 hours is typical, depending on your shooting access. Some learners do 2–3 hours and still progress by focusing on one story and one edit per week.
- 1–3h: shooting / field time
- 1–2h: edit and sequencing
- 1–2h: feedback and revisions
3 Are there live sessions? Live
Yes. Select tracks include live feedback labs. Others are self-paced with scheduled office hours. If you can’t attend live, you can submit work asynchronously and still receive structured notes.
4 Can I get mentor feedback? Mentorship
Mentor feedback is built-in for premium tracks and optional as an add-on elsewhere. You’ll get editing notes, story-structure suggestions, and a clear next-step plan for the following week.
5 Is there a certificate and does it matter? Outcomes
You’ll receive a completion certificate after submitting the final edit and reflection. In photography, your portfolio matters most; the certificate helps document your structured training and can be useful for grants or applications.
6 What if I’m brand new to documentary work? Beginner
That’s fine. We start with story selection, access, ethics, and a simple visual grammar. You’ll build habits: shooting with intention, editing with restraint, and writing concise captions.
7 Do you cover ethics and consent? Ethics
Yes. We cover consent, power dynamics, vulnerable subjects, and how to build trust. You’ll learn how to pitch clearly, keep expectations honest, and avoid visual stereotypes.
